Working From Home

Create the perfect virtual workspace

With more and more of us choosing to work from home, making sure we have space to conduct our business is important.

Without the proper set up then it is pretty easy to get distracted by the TV or any household chores that may need doing.

Here are just a few easy ways to create a home office environment that will help you stay focused and productive.

Choose a space with natural lighting.

Lighting can have a major influence on how comfortable your workspace is. Try to avoid any fluorescent lighting as it’s known to cause drowsiness.

Instead opt for a space that has plenty of natural light.

Get rid of the distractions.

Make sure your work area has as few distractions as possible and also a door that closes. That way you can block out any rowdy children and pets and also at the end of the day you can close the door on your work.

Make sure the temperature is right.

Around 25 degrees is the ideal temperature for productivity. A room that’s too hot can make you sleepy, one that’s too cold can be distracting and also increase errors in your work.

Keep it simple.

Your home office doesn’t have to be filled with plenty of gadgets or complicated decor. Instead, just invest in the equipment that will make work easier for you.

A desk, a decent chair and somewhere to store your papers really is all you need.

Have plants.

The presence of plants have many benefits from lowering stress levels to reducing the air pollution. So choose a low maintenance and small plant to have on your desk.

Keep supplies up.

You wouldn’t expect your office to run low on printer ink or paper so make sure you follow the same rules at home.

Not only do you not want to run out of vital supplies but it also saves you from getting distracted and going wandering in order to restock.

Install a separate phone line.

Unless you don’t use the phone very much, it’s advisable to have a separate phone line for your work calls.

This will help you remain professional and ensure you don’t take any calls outside of office hours.

Get creative with storage.

Filing cabinets aren’t the most attractive pieces of furniture, but you do need a place to put papers you use frequently. Instead try wall storage: magazine type racks, or children’s library-style display shelves.

Use Pinterest wisely.

If you’ve ever searched for “Home Office” on Pinterest or Instagram then you’ll know what we mean by this tip.

Unless you have umpteen hours to polish and perfect your work space, then try not to get too wrapped up in design ideas from sites such as Pinterest.

Working from home is a great perk to any job but making sure you have the right space is also important.
