How to make a small room appear bigger

When it comes to selling your home then it’s time to make your rooms really appeal to those potential buyers and if you have small rooms, then this can be especially tricky.

But don’t despair, if you have small rooms then it IS possible to make them appear bigger and brighter just by being more mindful about how you arrange furniture.

Here are our top tips on making a small room appear bigger.

1.Ditch the clutter.

Clutter is the number one offender when it comes to making a space look small. Anything that’s not being used or doesn’t have a purpose when it comes to dressing the room must be stored away.

Remember, it’s not forever, it’s just whilst you sell your home.

2.Go tall.

You want to draw eyes up from the floor all the way to the ceiling. This makes the room look taller, which in turn means the room looks bigger.

One simple way to do this is to make sure your curtains go all the way from the ceiling to the floor.

Also try to accessorise using one larger piece rather than smaller pieces as this will give the room balance.

Using vertical lines when it comes to carpets and wallpaper can elongate the room.

 3.Use light

Light can be your best friend.

Rooms often look smaller when they are poorly lit.

So rather than focusing on central lighting, use uplighters to highlight the corners and to add volume.

4.Mirrors.

Mirrors are great for adding visual space because they fool the eye in to making the room look larger and lighter.

5.Be aware of proportions.

No point in jamming a king-sized bed in a room that can barely manage a double.

Think about what size furniture actually fits the room.

Another good tip is to make sure furniture doesn’t always touch the floor as this will give the illusion of space and allow the light to bounce around.

6.Double up.

You want more room so the ideal solution is to get rid of some furniture only leaving what’s absolutely necessary.

So think about what you can double up on to create more space, for example a chest of drawers could also be a table, or old cases used as storage.

7.Colour

White is a great colour to use when you’re trying to create the illusion of more space.

As you can see some small tips can make a BIG difference when it comes to making sure your space looks appealing.
