13 Hacks for a better bedroom

The bedroom is the place where you start and end your day, so it’s only right that you’re going to want it to be a haven of peace and tranquility.

That isn’t always the case though often our bedrooms are used storage areas and can be a catalyst for chaos.

But don’t worry, whether you’re moving house or you just fancy a change. We’ve compiled some simple bedroom hacks that will help you look at your bedroom with fresh eyes as well as improving your sleep.

Follow the melon rule

Trinkets and ornaments can soon pile up leaving your bedroom looking more like a junk shop than a relaxing paradise. So stick with the simple rule that if your decoration is SMALLER than a cantaloupe melon, it’s going to make your room look and feel cluttered. So go for big, bold decorations instead - but just stick to one or two pieces.

Go Blue

There’s a reason that well known budget hotels go for blue and purple as their primary colours. It’s because those shades are known to reduce blood pressure and slow down your heart rate, leading to a better nights sleep. So when you’re choosing colours for your bedroom opt for blues and purples and you’ll be dozing off in no time.

Create a sleepy scent

Get creative. Make a DIY room scent using 120ml of water, 1/2 tsp of witch hazel and then 5-10 drops of good quality essential oil. Add to a spray bottle (preferably glass) and spritz just before bed.

Oils that help promote relaxation and sleep include lavender, bergamot, sandalwood and

chamomile.

Keep it cosy

If you have a particularly chilly house or maybe you’ve got wooden floors, then consider adding a rug. Not only will it look great but in the winter months it will help insulate the room.

Also by making sure it’s stripy you’ll add vital length to the room.

Believe in the magic of mirrors

By adding a mirror to your bedroom, in particular your feature wall, you’ll create the illusion of

extra light and space.

Build a tower

Wardrobe space is coveted in any bedroom but make the most of your space by opting for floor to ceiling wardrobes. Whether they’re freestanding or fitted, having the floor to ceiling look will ensure that you don’t visually break up the walls and essentially cut the space.

Use space wisely

Your headboard has hidden potential, it’s the perfect place for multi-functional shelving to cater for your alarms, books, lamps etc. Think about how you can maximise your storage options by using nooks and crannies that are neglected.

Invest in an ottoman bed

Think about it, the bedroom hosts a lot of clutter, from clothing to paperwork. But an ottoman bed will remove that clutter languishing under your bed as well any other bits and bobs you have lying around.

Store your linen - smartly

Top tip for storing your linens is to fold and store your under-sheet, duvet cover and pillow cases inside one of the set’s pillow cases. All your bedding will be organised, neat and in one spot.

Open your windows daily

Stale air will not only harbour pollutants and germs but it’ll also have a negative effect on your mood. Be sure to open your windows every day and let the air circulate around.

Ditch the TV

Yes you may see your bedroom as some kind of chill out zone but let’s face it, it’s a room that should relax you and get you in the mood for sleep. Ban smartphones, computers and TV’s from the bedroom and banish the sleep blocking blue light. You’ll thank us in the long run.

Don’t always sleep in the pitch black

Try leaving your curtains slightly open at night. Your serotonin will rise with the sun and you’ll wake up naturally - think of the main benefit - no pesky alarm.

Keep a notepad by your bed

There’s nothing worse than trying to sleep but having a whirlwind of thoughts buzzing around our brains. Stop this happening by keeping a notepad by the side of your bed so you can jot down all those daily thoughts before lights out.
